L. Mendel Rivers Elementary among top ten elementary schools in the state.

L. Mendel Rivers Elementary has recently been recognized as one of the top ten schools in Oklahoma by the website  Ashley Wehrli, the article’s author, says schools were selected using SchoolDigger’s average standard scores which include test scores in Reading, Math and Science as well as student teacher ratios.

“Altus schools have long been an important piece of what make this community so special, and seeing Rivers Elementary listed as one of the top schools in the entire state is just one example of the quality of education in Altus.  I am proud of the hard working teachers and administrators who made it happen and excited about what it means for our future.  This is further validation, along with our district's outstanding performance on the state reading tests and A-F grading system, that families can expect stellar results from their children in Altus, OK, with highly dedicated, highly qualified, and highly talented educators.  Education is important to parents and to employers, and coupling our schools' excellence with our city's pro-business, pro-growth climate is a recipe for success,” stated Brian Bush, CEO of the Altus Chamber of Commerce.

According to, Rivers Elementary jumped 14 places in the rankings since the 2010 rankings were released. Roger Hill, Altus Superintendent, was pleased with the recognition of one of the many great schools in Altus. “Rivers Elementary School is a shiny bright star in our school district.  Students have always excelled at a high level at Rivers.  It's a credit to outstanding leadership, a dedicated teaching and support staff, engaged parents, and high expectations for academic achievement.  We are very proud of this special recognition for Rivers Elementary School," he said.

“Rivers is a phenomenal place to call home. Our success is a result of hard work, high expectations, and a partnership between staff, student and parents,” stated Mellissa Fourroux, fourth grade teacher.   Other teachers and staff members were just as proud of the recognition of the hard work students, teachers and parents put into each school year.  “Wow, I was elated to know that our school was one of the top five in the State!  I am so honored to work with a faculty that puts the children first.  I know that River's Elementary is and will continue to be successful,” responded Stephanie Tucker, a 1st grade teacher.

Other schools ranked in the top five in the state of Oklahoma include, Wayland Bond Elementary School in Moore School District, Jenks Southeast Elementary in Jenks School District, Schwartz Elementary School out of Mid-Del School District, and Eisenhower International School in the Tulsa School District.  To view the entire rankings list visit
